Back Pain and Nerve Pain from Herniated Disc Can Result in Sciatica or Leg Pain

Santa Cruz, CA (PRWEB) August 25, 2010

People who suffer from back pain (http://www.repairmyback.com/index.htm), nerve pain, pinched nerve, herniated disc, sciatica or leg pain can now breathe a sigh of relief. Doctors, scientists and engineers have designed non-surgical treatments that use modern technological advances in computers and medical engineering. As a result, many patients can now avoid back surgery.

Dr. John Falkenroth, D.C. of Back Pain & Sciatica Clinic says “These treatments are perhaps the greatest weapons ever invented against back pain, pinched nerve, herniated disc, sciatica and leg pain.” About 80 % of Americans will experience lower back pain at some point in their lifetime.

Many debilitating back pain are complicated by a herniated disc that causes nerve pain (http://www.repairmyback.com/index.htm) down the buttocks, thighs, legs or foot. This condition is called sciatica. If the pinched nerve is not corrected, the patient may develop weakness of the leg muscles making it hard to walk especially up stairs.

The spinal discs rely on the proper movement of the joints in the back to get nutrients and hydration in and get waste products out. When the back joints are not moving properly, the discs start to fill up with toxic waste. Plus, the lack of fluids and nutrients make the discs severely dehydrated and malnourished.

The dehydration, malnutrition and build up of toxins will cause cracks in the disc. Over time, these cracks will get bigger and bigger. When this happens the jelly-like material in the middle of the disc will seep through the cracks. This is how a herniated disc develops. If the herniated disc pinches the sciatic nerve, the nerve pain can result in sciatica (http://www.repairmyback.com/index.htm) or leg pain.

According to Mayo Clinic, “Being tall increases your risk of disk herniation. Men taller than 5 feet 11 inches and women taller than 5 feet 7 inches appear to have a greater risk of a herniated disk.” The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that Americans are about one inch taller today than they were in 1960. When back pain gets complicated by a herniated disc, sciatica and leg pain are usually also present.

Signs of a back problem include back pain, neck pain, numbness and tingling, muscle weakness, muscle spasm, decreased flexibility, grinding sound with movement and leg pain (http://www.repairmyback.com/index.htm). Anyone experiencing any of these should consult a back pain specialist immediately to prevent the problem from getting worse and to avoid complications. Also, early treatment can minimize the cost to fix it.

Here are tips from Dr. Falkenroth on how to avoid debilitating back pain in the first place. Don’t smoke. Smoking dehydrates your discs and increases your risk for a herniated disc. Maintain a healthy weight. If you are overweight, your extra weight causes extra stress on the discs in your lower back. Choose a job that does not require long periods of sitting or long periods of standing in one position. Also, be careful during the first 2 hours of your work shift. This is when you are most likely to hurt your back.

To fight back pain and sciatica, Dr. Falkenroth employs computerized spinal joint analysis and treatment that are very comfortable for patients. One treatment uses a high-tech piezoelectric sensor that detects areas in the patient’s back with abnormal joint motion. It then oscillates up to 12 impulses per second to gently free up the stuck spinal joint.

Another treatment for lower back pain, sciatica, pinched nerve and herniated disc (http://www.repairmyback.com/index.htm) uses a computer-guided gentle traction of the spine that targets a specific herniated disc. This treatment is so comfortable that most patients take a relaxing nap during treatment. Because these high-tech treatments are so easy on the patients and deliver outstanding results, they are becoming increasingly popular among patients who suffer from back pain, herniated disc, sciatica, leg pain, nerve pain or pinched nerve.

Patients that use these treatments love the results. According to one patient, “I went to see five other doctors before finding Dr. Falkenroth, all with some results, but not with results that Dr. Falkenroth has given me. I am very happy that I found him when I did. He’s very very good at what he does.” Some patients even drive over 5 hours one way to receive these treatments.

For more information on these breakthrough treatments, go to www.repairmyback.com. Santa Cruz county residents who want to find out if they might benefit from these treatments can schedule a free consultation with Dr. Falkenroth by simply calling his office at (831) 475-8600.

Essential Information for Beginning or Improving Emergency Preparedness Planning -- Family or Business

Nevada City, CA (PRWEB) August 25, 2010

As current events become more critical to the conscientious preparedness and contingency planner, reliable and accurate information and guidance has become more vital. While governmental and Red Cross websites are of great service in alerting the public to the importance of emergency and disaster preparedness, and offering basic information, more detailed and specific guidelines are recommended.

Denis Korn, with over 35 years experience as a recognized expert in preparedness and outdoor recreation safety planning, has created two web resources for the preparedness and contingency planner. PrepareDirect (http://www.preparedirect.com) is the product site with quality items and provisions, and Learn To Prepare (http://learntoprepare.com) is the information blog.

Learn To Prepare is devoted to specific and accurate information, guidelines, tips, links, resources, recommendations and step by step instruction for the serious emergency prepper, outdoor adventurer and corporate contingency planner for human resources. In conjunction with the specific preparedness topics, Mr. Korn has drawn upon his background as a college philosophy instructor to offer insights and reflections on other important factors that influence the preparedness process such as attitude, honesty and trust.

While there are numerous timely and relevant articles and posts relating to emergency and disaster preparedness planning at Learn To Prepare, Beginning & Improving Preparedness Planning (http://learntoprepare.com/beginning-and-improving-preparedness-planning/) is appropriate for both the new and continuing planner. This article will assist anyone who is serious about preparedness with the right questions to answer, guidelines, action steps and potential emergency scenarios.

The article presents a guideline that can be followed which will lead one on an important journey to being prepared in the event of any number of potentially unexpected events. This process is basically undertaken in three phases – each one of which will take as much time as one wishes to devote, and the degree of urgency that is being experienced.

1. First, there is an initial assessment necessary to determine the direction you are heading.
2. Second, there is further evaluation, research, and planning required to develop a firm foundation for the third phase, and to develop the clarity required for appropriate and accurate decision making.
3. Third, there is taking action and assembling the appropriate provisions and critical information you have determined are necessary for your security and peace of mind. This phase is ongoing as you continue to evaluate, research, and build up your supplies and information.

The article begins the preparedness process with 6 basic questions that one is encouraged to answer that will lead along the matrix to the final destination. The first 3 questions are most critical and will establish a foundation for discovery:

What is your attitude concerning emergency preparedness?
What are the circumstances or scenarios and their severity you have determined may exist that will require you to rely upon your preparedness supplies?
What is the length of time you will be affected during these scenarios that you will be required to rely on your preparedness supplies?

The committed individual, family and business is encouraged to study carefully the articles and posts presented at Learn To Prepare. Taking the appropriate steps in emergency preparedness can ensure health, well-being and possibly the saving of lives.

Hyundai Introduces its All-New Car, the Compact i35 -- Powerful, Strong and Very Safe

(PRWEB) August 25, 2010

The Hyundai (http://www.hyundai.co.nz/) i35 is the latest edition of Hyundai’s most popular model worldwide, it reflects the powerful brand’s latest Fluidic Sculpture philosophy and the newly evolved Wind Craft design.

Featuring the Gamma 1.6-litre GDI engine and 6-speed automatic transmission developed entirely in-house, it goes on sale in Korea this month (August) and is due in New Zealand early next year.

“This new replacement for the Elantra (http://www.hyundai.co.nz/new-cars/elantra/) will most likely provide the best styling and performance in its class,” explained the Chief Operating Officer of Hyundai New Zealand, Tom Ruddenklau.

“It has a sportier and even more progressive image than its predecessor, and it will continue the successful Hyundai formula of optimum technology and powertrain to deliver class-leading performance and fuel efficiency (http://www.hyundai.co.nz/about-hyundai/news-and-events/Hyundai%20announces%20goal%20to%20extend%20fuel%20effciency%20leadership).” The i35 will sip just 6.0l/100km*.

Although the i35 is a completely new vehicle, it’s the fifth generation of the model’s lineage which has racked up cumulative sales of 6 million units worldwide and high recognition from a number of world renowned car-rating agencies.

“We are confident this model will once again make a great impact worldwide in addition to the domestic market,” said the President and CEO of Hyundai Motor, Steve S. Yang.

The all-new, powerful and fuel efficient 4-cylinder Gamma 1.6 Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) engine delivers a peak output of 140ps at 6,300 RPM and maximum torque of 17.0kg/m.

GDI technology doesn’t only boost power output: it also improves fuel economy.

The i35’s commitment to extreme fuel efficiency continues with a six-speed automatic transmission.

Hyundai’s Fluidic Sculpture design philosophy reflects sophistication and dynamic lines into the shape of vehicles, while Wind Craft has its design motives in the flowing movement of air and the i35’s artistic sculpture.

Like Hyundai’s latest models ix35 the compact SUV and i45 sedan, the i35’s outer design is highlighted by bold, dynamic graphic elements such as hexagonal front grille and dramatically swept back headlamps. Alloy wheels (15-, 16- or 17-inch) complete its assertive stance.

The new i35 will delight and surprise with a raft of other advanced features not found on other compacts, including Smart Parking Assist System (SPAS) that assist the driver when slipping between two cars parked in single file by automatically controlling only the steering wheel using ultrasonic sensors, HID (High Intensity Discharge) headlamps, LED combination lamps in the rear, heated rear seats, puddle lamps and a color TFT LCD information display nestled in the gauge cluster.

Typically being Hyundai, the i35 is strong on safety features. VSM (Vehicle Stability Management), which helps vehicles stay in a stable position, is applied for the first time in its class. Side & curtain airbags as well as active headrest are provided as basic features. High-tech safety features such as TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System), ESS (Emergency Stop Signal) are also available.

Authors of Lessons to My Children Issue Three Simple Financial Back-to-School Basics for Students and Parents

Washington, DC (Vocus) August 25, 2010

The authors of LESSONS TO MY CHILDREN: Simple Life Lessons for Financial Success, Wealth and Abundance (http://www.lessonstomychildren.com) are offering the following financial back to school basics:

•Students should have just one credit card. Preferably, students should use a bank debit card or a pre-paid credit card to avoid sinking into debt and/or harming their credit rating. If a student must have a traditional credit card shop for one with a low interest rate and no monthly or annual fee. Pay off the card in full and before the due date every month to build a solid credit rating.
•Students should write themselves a “reality check.” Know what you can spend – and what you can’t - and don’t charge anything you can’t pay off in full when the credit card comes due.
•Start saving now by paying yourself first. Putting away just 10% of every paycheck, birthday check, or graduation gift in an interest bearing savings account that isn’t linked to your ATM card will pay off in the long run. The key is to not tap into that account, unless an emergency arises. Time plus money equals more money – it’s as simple as that.

“Parents and students often assume the financial basics of life are taught in high school or college. The sad fact is, kids are walking away with degrees, but not necessarily the life skills that will lead them to financial success and, ultimately, financial independence from their parents,” said Navigator Wealth Management founder and co-author Mark Cohen, “Our book is a simple curriculum of success that every parent should share with their children.”

“We believe every student should head back to school with a copy of this book in their backpack,” said Navigator Wealth Management CEO and co-author Wes Burnett, “It’s Personal Finance 101 – the simple life lessons that will shape students’ futures by shaping how they handle their money. And the earlier they start, the brighter their future will be. We’ve shared a few important basics here, but the book is a comprehensive toolkit for success.”

Students and their parents are encouraged to explore the savings and budgeting calculators located on the book's website (http://www.lessonstomychildren.com/tools.htm).

About the Book:

LESSONS TO MY CHILDREN illustrates the basics of financial literacy - from budgeting to investing – with real life stories, time tested practices, and easy to understand advice that will help both parent and child take control of their financial futures. Lessons to My Children is the financial advice every parent should give their children – and the wisdom children of all ages should follow!

AskMyAdvocate.com also announced today that it is offering new members an account credit of up to $100.00 for use toward the Company's premium advocacy services. Already a success, this program is expected to continue through December 31, 2010.

AdXplore Announces 90,000 New Jobs in the U.S. for People with iPhones

Silicon Valley, CA (PRWEB) August 25, 2010

AdXplore is recruiting iPhone owners to become Independent Sales Reps (ISR’s) who will work directly with locally-owned businesses to create effective, low-cost mobile-optimized advertising and coupons on the AdXplore ad network. In addition to its advertising search capabilities, the free AdXplore iPhone app (http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/adxplore/id369958123?mt=8&uo=6) has every tool an ISR needs to set up a business account, then create and post their advertising entirely from an iPhone without ever leaving the premises.

Most small business owners and managers are too busy running their business to learn a do-it-yourself advertising site like Google AdWords. An AdXplore ad rep will set up their mobile advertising (http://sales.adxplore.net/how-we-create-ads/) for $150, less expensive than almost any other form of advertising, with $120 going directly back to the ISR as compensation (http://sales.adxplore.net/compensation/), keeping jobs and dollars in the community.

Applications are now being accepted via the company’s website, http://sales.adxplore.net (http://sales.adxplore.net).

“Our goal is to put a location-based mobile-advertising representative on the street in every one of the 90,000 cities in the U.S. Some of the larger cities will accommodate 10 or more mobile advertising reps.” says Steve Russ, founder of AdXplore. “With the benefit of absolutely no start-up costs beyond the iPhone they already have, we can put thousands of people back to work immediately and empower the Think Local/Shop Local movement at the same time. We’re providing the missing ‘Search Local’ piece necessary to fulfill their mission.”

Pearson Honors Environmentally Friendly Utah Facility

Sandy, UT (PRWEB) August 25, 2010

In line with Pearson's commitment to environmentally sound practices, the education services and technology company today commemorated its Sandy, Utah, facility for its LEED-Certified (Commercial Interiors) status, established by the U.S. Green Building Council and verified by the Green Building Certification Institute. LEED -- The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design - is the nation's preeminent program for the design, construction, and operation of high performance green buildings.

The LEED certification is a first for Pearson, achieved through environmentally friendly construction and development practices. The facility was designed with high-efficiency lighting and controls to reduce energy usage, mostly recycled furniture and construction materials, finishes fabricated from sustainable sources, plumbing that conserves water, and materials and configuration that maximize natural lighting and maintain optimal air flow throughout the building.

Day-to-day activities in the facility are eco-friendly as well. Employees utilize re-usable materials in the kitchen and drink from a water filtration system to reduce bottled water waste, while daily maintenance is performed with environmentally sound cleaning products.

Steve Curtis, president of Pearson's Data Solutions Group that shares the facility with the Pearson Learning Technologies group, said, "When it came time to move to a new facility to accommodate our growing team, we were pleased to be given the opportunity to upgrade to state-of-the-art green facility. The abundance of natural light, views, and air quality present in this facility enhance employee comfort while being environmentally responsible."

Upon moving to this new facility, Pearson also worked with the Revive program at Green Solutions North America to help repurpose unneeded office furniture from the old facility, directing it towards local charities, schools, and non-profit organizations as its first priority. All materials and products that could not be re-used were taken apart and recycled, with the barest minimum going to landfill.
"Working closely with our core design team and end-users, Pearson earned its first LEED certification, a great achievement for the company," said Anthony Musto, Pearson's Vice President, Project Management. "Not only is the new facility environmentally sound, but its design enhances the daily workspace experience for our employees. We expect to continue to work to attain LEED status and eco-friendly new facilities while upgrading existing locations to higher energy efficiencies."

Musto managed the project in collaboration with Donae Viertel, Facility Director, Pearson. Dorothy Zarnik, Principal, The Aztec Corporation, oversaw the implementation of the specifications and design.

John William Barnes: From the Board Room to the Drawing Room

Nashville, TN (Vocus) August 25, 2010

After a long and successful career as a creative director where he created 1,500 album covers for more than 200 artists, and thousands of ads, J.W.(Bill) Barnes has committed himself full-time to the pursuit of his passion. Barnes has turned to painting in a conceptual, surrealist style as well as traditional European landscapes and still-life painting.

“I like to draw my inspiration from sources that aren’t normally put together,” says Barnes. “…it really causes the viewer to examine the painting with a critical eye. As a result, I find that many of my paintings end up reflecting the surrealist style.”

Barnes began to develop his personal style when he enrolled in the Famous Artist Correspondence Course, which taught him a great deal about perspective and composition. He then continued his graphic and fine art studies at The Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles, California. He received his degree in Advertising and Design and graduated with honors. Honing his craft, Barnes continues to study the work of many great painters and frequently attends the workshops of artists all over the country when he’s not teaching his own. The results of his dedication are easy to see in his captivating paintings.

“Working in the presence of other artists at workshops has helped me discover techniques and styles that have strongly influenced my work,” Barnes says. “It has also helped me transition from the world of graphic art, where perfection is expected immediately, to the world of fine art, where even master painters will revisit an old work in order to correct a small detail.”

With his strong dedication to his craft has come a wave of due recognition for his work. Barnes has been featured in several shows in Nashville and around the South. He was also profiled and featured in three issues of International Artist Magazine in 2009.

Many of his paintings can be viewed at www.jwbarnes.com, which contains galleries of his work in categories such as conceptual, landscape, still-life, portraits, and mixed media. 59% of Travellers Want Family-Only Section on Flights Reveals Skyscanner

(Vocus) August 25, 2010

Following the recent uproar over a woman who claimed a baby’s screaming made her ears bleed on a Qantas Airlines flight, a poll carried out by cheap flights (http://www.skyscanner.com/) comparison site, Skyscanner, has revealed that 59% of travellers would like a ‘families only’ section onboard flights. Non-parents particularly liked the idea, with 68% voting in favor, however, less than a third of parents surveyed were in agreement.

Over 2,000 people voted in the Skyscanner poll; just 8% of child-free respondents thought people should be entitled to sit where they like, while almost 70% ‘wanted to sit as far away as possible from children.’ Almost a quarter of non-parents went one step further saying that they would prefer flights that were free from children altogether.

Of those who were parents themselves, 45% said they didn’t want a families-only section because they didn’t want to sit next to ‘other people’s horrors’ while 24% disagreed with the idea because they felt that people should be able to ‘sit where they liked.’ Just 31% of parents were in favor of the allocated section.

Other suggestions put forward by Skyscanner users to solve the problem of noisy children on flights included: the provision of a baby nursery, only allowing well-behaved children to travel, and on a less sympathetic note, one user said “children should go in the cargo hold.”

Skyscanner PR Manager Mary Porter commented:

“As a relatively new mom myself I can still remember that feeling of dread when you found yourself seated next to a baby on a long flight; however, since regularly flying with my one-year-old, I am much more aware of what a stressful, and often embarrassing, situation it can be for parents.”

Mary continues, “I’m not surprised that in a previous poll we found young children were deemed to be the ‘most annoying’ factor on flights. When tempers are frayed, a screaming child can cause a major disturbance for fellow passengers.”

“If passengers are prepared to pay extra for child-free flying, perhaps the solution is a premium adults-only section, rather than a pre-allocated families section, giving airlines yet another extra they can charge for? I am sure this service would prove to be really popular on routes that attract a lot of families such as flights to Florida (http://www.skyscanner.com/flights-to/flori/cheap-flights-to-florida.html),” says Mary.

Citizens Looking for Ways to Support Veterans; "An Evening For Heroes" Gives Them an Option

Columbia, SC (PRWEB) August 25, 2010

The WJB Dorn VA Medical Center will host a dinner event for Operation Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom (OEF/OIF) Veterans and family members on September 2nd, 2010 at 7Grill. The event is called “An Evening for Heroes”; Veterans and family members will be able to enjoy an evening of good food and entertainment at no cost to them.

The first of this regularly planned, monthly dinner event is sponsored by the WJB Dorn VA Medical Center, and is supported by donations from private individuals and local vendors in the Columbia community.

The event will provide Veterans an opportunity to spend time with family members and other OEF/OIF Veterans while enjoying a meal made to order. This event will allow citizens to show support and gratitude for these brave men and women, and let everyone know that we stand behind our Veterans and service members.

This idea began in Washington D.C. at Fran O’Brien’s Stadium Steakhouse in 2003. It gives military veterans a guest of honor status as they undergo rehabilitation for their injuries. Hal Koster, the owner, felt that “they would heal quicker” with a night out. The popularity of the event made it a weekly staple at the famed steakhouse.

Patrons there have been known to buy whole rounds of drinks for the attendees, and often, some will just stop by to say “Thank you.” to a veteran on the way to the restroom. Attendees know that this dinner is very, very special. Applause has been known to spontaneously break out. These salutations “go a long way towards reassuring soldiers that they continue to enjoy the support and gratitude of their fellow citizens.”

This event provides a rare respite from the intense business of getting better. Since veterans are surrounded by family, caregivers, and fellow servicemen, they can let their guard down a little, blow off steam, and reconnect with the ordinary pleasure of an evening out with good food, drink and company.

“This is just some way for us to play a part in the long journey through the healing process. We just want everyone to know that we stand behind our military and this is just a small way to thank them.” Mark Leger, owner and manager of 7 Grill.

The WJB Dorn VA Medical Center and Mark Leger are proud to host these wonderful events for Veterans, and welcome anyone who wishes to become a part of this memorable evening.

FN P90 Airsoft Gun: Not Your Father’s Airsoft Gun

Pacoima, CA (PRWEB) August 25, 2010

When military units from Saudi Arabia, Peru, Thailand and other countries were looking for a personal defense weapon that was more compact than the traditional rifles they had been carrying, they turned to the P90. The compact machine gun with the highly recognizable shape holds many advantages in the real combat arena that directly translate to its airsoft brethren. One of the most distinct features of the P90 is its versatility for both the right and left handed shooter. The airsoft P90 gun (http://www.toykin.com/470-fps-Auto-Electric-FN-P90-Airsoft-Rifle-P90.html) offers a great mix of compact size, sustained firepower and shot velocity.

With unconventional looks, the P90 has drawn a lot of attention in the firearms world. The gun features a top loading magazine, integrated sights, and a highly unusual stock not seen before on a submachine gun. Another well liked feature on the P90 is the ease with which it disassembles and can be put back together.

The airsoft FN P90 (http://www.toykin.com/470-fps-Auto-Electric-FN-P90-Airsoft-Rifle-P90.html) is a very logically and well built piece of equipment once you overcome its space age looks. The grip on the P90 is very comfortable for any shooter when brought to the shoulder and placed in the firing position. One of the reasons for this is it is very compact at only 22 inches in length. Another fantastic feature on the P90 is the pressure sensitive trigger that is offered on the gun. When in auto mode, your rate of fire is determined directly by your pressure input on the trigger, and is very responsive.

The P90 airsoft gun is battery powered, running off of a 9.6V battery. This is more than enough power for the P90, as it will propel its projectiles well over 200 feet and at a rate of 470 Feet per Second. In terms of speed, the high powered P90 motor has no problem emptying a 68 round magazine in mere seconds at a rate of about 800 rpm.
The P90 is perfectly suited for both medium and close range combat thanks to its compact design. Some shooters even find holding the P90 at arm’s length and firing it like a pistol to be their preferred method of shooting. The P90’s comfortable pistol grip, along with it weighing in at only five and a half pounds makes this an easy task.
The P90 airsoft gun (http://www.toykin.com) is a must have for any airsoft gun enthusiast. Its light weight and compact design, along with its high velocity make it the perfect submachine gun. The P90 makes a great second weapon to have during combat, as it is easily storable and concealable.

Key features of the P90 airsoft gun:

• Metal Gear
• High Torque Motor
• Full and Semi Automatic
• Shoots at an amazing 470 fps
• Highly Accurate
• ~800 Rounds Per Minute Fire Rate
• Very Realistic Look and Feel

Purchase the P90 airsoft gun (http://www.toykin.com/toys.php?term=p90&price1=&price2=&Submit2=Search) or one of several other airsoft guns (http://www.toykin.com/toys.php?term=airsoft&price1=&price2=&Submit2=Search) in stock at http://www.toykin.com (http://www.toykin.com). Monterey College of Law -- First Law School in US to go iPad

Seaside, CA (PRWEB) August 25, 2010

Monterey College of Law (http://www.montereylaw.edu), a California accredited law school located in Seaside, California is the first law school in the US to adopt the iPad as an integral part of the law school curriculum. Law students at Monterey College of Law returned from summer break to the exciting news that they are part of a unique pilot program that will provide iPads to each law student at the school. Through an innovative program developed by the law school with BAR BRI, the country’s largest bar exam review company, each MCL law student receives an iPad when they enroll in the BAR BRI supplemental curriculum program that the students use while attending school and in preparation for the California Bar Exam.

“Law schools are rarely found close to the leading edge of technology,” said Mitchel Winick, President and Dean of the law school. “However, it is clear to me that combining this technology with interactive, portable, timely content and harnessing the energy of on-line social networking provides a number of immediate educational opportunities.” This is particularly true for an evening law school like MCL that has a traditional classroom-based legal education program in which many students are balancing a full work and family schedule while attending law school.

“Many of our law students work the equivalent of three jobs,” said Wendy LaRiviere, Dean of Admissions. “Between law school, work, and family, it is a constant challenge for them to set aside enough time during the week to study.” Winick believes that “ the iPad will provide time-challenged students an easy way to add 30 to 45 minutes of studying each day . . . during a lunch break, waiting in the car-pool line, or even getting their oil changed. The result will be an additional 3 to 5 hours per week of valuable study time.” It is a compelling argument because it has the potential to add 200 to 250 hours of study time per year and possibly as much as 600 to 700 additional hours over the course of the law degree program. “If our students use this ‘found’ time to do additional reading and incorporate a more extensive use of their class notes, study guides, and practice exams . . . we expect to see a positive result in law school performance and continued improvement in the bar pass rates of our graduates,” said Winick.

Chris Marohn, a third-year MCL law student who is the immediate-past President of the Student Bar Association noted that “excited Facebook posts about the iPad program were circulating through the rest of the student body before the Dean finished announcing the new program to the first-year class. There was a lot of excitement among my classmates, particularly once Dean Winick started handing out iPads," said Marohn. Winick noted that 100% of the entering first-year students and approximately 70% of the upper level students enrolled in the new program by the end of the first week of law school. He expects that most of the remaining students will enroll over the next few weeks as students begin experimenting with new ways to study using the iPads. It is only a matter of time before virtual study groups are formed to support each of the core law school classes.

The second step of the program is to provide access to iPads for MCL law faculty members who are interested in integrating the iPad into their regular course materials and classroom presentations. “Historically, law faculty members are known to be very traditional in their approach to teaching. In some law schools, classes have been taught the same way, with very few changes, for more than 100 years” said Winick. “The objective of the MCL faculty pilot program will be to develop examples of using iPad technology to enhance and expand traditional legal education without diminishing any of the core academic values,” said Stephen Wagner, law professor and President of the faculty senate. The law school will pilot-test the faculty program during the current academic year and anticipates expanding the program to include all interested faculty members next year.

Being the first law school out of approximately 220 accredited law schools in the US to broadly adopt the iPad is a bold step. However it is not the only innovative program announced this year at MCL. In April, the law school celebrated the 40th Anniversary of Earth Day by hosting a ribbon-cutting of its new Community Justice Center, a LEED Platinum registered project. LEED Platinum is the highest green-building standard for sustainable design and construction. According to the US Green Building Council, MCL is only the third law school in the US to open a LEED Platinum facility. The new center is home to a courtroom, regional mediation center, and a new community legal clinic that will be staffed by MCL law students. “We are fortunate to live, study, and work in one of the most beautiful and ecologically unique regions of the country,” said Winick. “We not only teach about environmental rights and responsibilities in the law school classroom . . . through our LEED Platinum facility we are providing a tangible example of the importance of sustainability and stewardship of our precious environmental resources.”

New Talk Radio Show "Mad As Hell in America with Adam Klugman" Offers Callers One Minute to be "Mad As Hell"

Portland, OR (PRWEB) August 25, 2010

Progressive radio talk show host Adam Klugman is mad as hell and he isn't going to take it anymore. In fact, he is inviting Americans from every side of the political spectrum to join him on his new radio show Mad As Hell in America with Adam Klugman, (http://www.MadAsHellinAmerica.com) debuting September 18th and 25th from 3:00 - 6:00pm on Portland's AM 620 KPOJ. His offering to callers: one minute of uninterrupted air time to express why they are mad as hell, too.

"Most people are afraid of their anger," says Klugman, "because they think it's going to make them like the small minority of belligerent Americans who scream and throw tantrums to get what they want. But that's not anger. It's childish rage and it has been getting its way in this country for far too long."

Klugman goes on to make an important distinction between anger and rage. "What we're seeing from the far right and the Tea Party looks like a mad as hell movement, but its not. It's a Populist Rage Party. (http://www.nytimes.com/2010/03/28/opinion/28rich.html) And rage always has the same goal - to destroy. Just look at the Tea Party agenda. What is it? To dismantle the government. To destroy it. It's a complete failure of imagination."

Klugman continues, "But legitimate, human anger isn't destructive at all. In fact, it's inherently creative because it's prodding us for a response. There's nothing wrong with you if you feel mad as hell about America's torture policy (http://www.aclu.org/national-security/enduring-abuse-torture-and-cruel-treatment-united-states-home-and-abroad-executive). You should be mad as hell. It's a crime against Humanity. But what if, instead of throwing that feeling away because it isn't popular at cocktail parties, I paid attention to it? What if I really listened to it? Well, in that case I just might have to change the world."

No stranger to hot button issues, Klugman has been a driving force behind the successful Progressive Media Agency - a boutique political ad firm based in Portland, Oregon that caters to controversial causes and progressive candidates. In his tenure there, Klugman built a reputation as a creative maverick, specializing in hard to handle issues like racism for the YWCA, separation of church and state for First Freedom First, (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O35FfM5ziIw) Single Payer for the Mad As Hell Doctors and he even launched the first ever Christian radio outreach campaign for the DNC in 2006.

"I like the tough stuff" he says. "That's why I wanted to do a radio show where everyone, even the people who strongly disagree with me, are welcome to call in and say their peace. So pick up the phone - tell me I'm an idiot. I don't promise to agree with you, but I do promise to listen. Because I believe there's a conversation just beyond the false divisions of right and left that wants to happen in this country. But it will only get started when we actually start listening to each other. And people are mad right now. Mad as hell, in fact. That anger needs to be expressed and heard so we can all move on."

In addition to the debut of his new radio show, Klugman also has a website at MadAsHellinAmerica.com, (http://www.MadAsHellinAmerica.com) complete with an open discussion board and video blog where people can upload their own uncensored Mad As Hell Minute. "I only have three rules" Klugman declares. "No racism. No sexism. No hate speech. Otherwise… bring it on."

Mad As in Hell in America with Adam Klugman airs on consecutive Saturdays from 3:00 - 6:00pm starting September 18th and September 25th on Portland's only progressive talk station AM 620 KPOJ.

AUC Robert W. Woodruff Library Hosts 'Father of Micro-Credit' and Nobel Prize Laureate Muhammad Yunus

Atlanta, GA (PRWEB) August 25, 2010

More than 30 years ago, Muhammad Yunus, Ph.D., made a $27 investment that has since netted more than $6 billion -- not for himself but for entrepreneurs in his native Bangladesh and around the world too poor to qualify for traditional bank loans.

His bold move – extending small loans to people without money or collateral – helped spawn a micro-credit movement in the developing countries that has since spread globally and earned him recognition worldwide as the “Father of Micro-credit.”

As micro-credit has become an increasingly powerful tool in the fight against world poverty, the Bangladeshi bestselling author and Nobel Prize laureate is touting yet another innovative concept in his recently published book “Building Social Business: The New Kind of Capitalism that Serves Humanity’s Most Pressing Needs.”

Dr. Yunus will be in town Friday, Aug. 27, for a lecture and book signing in honor of the completion of the first phase of renovation of the Atlanta University Center’s Robert W. Woodruff Library. “An Afternoon with Dr. Muhammad Yunus,” scheduled for 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the library’s exhibition hall, will be a follow up to a 2:30 p.m. ribbon cutting and celebration set for Thursday, Aug. 26. The library is located at 111 James P. Brawley Dr. S.W.

The Woodruff Library and the historically black colleges and universities of the Atlanta University Center – Clark Atlanta University, Morehouse College, the Morehouse School of Medicine, and Spelman College, are sponsoring the two-day celebration.

Event organizers consider the visit by the pioneering economist and banker an example of the caliber of expanded programming they plan to host at the library going forward.

“We are honored to welcome this world renowned scholar and economist to the Atlanta University Center,” said Loretta Parham, CEO and library director. “As a collaborative resource of the AUC, the Woodruff Library is pleased to host thought-provoking programming of this caliber for the benefit of students, faculty, and staff.”

“Building Social Business,” which will be included among the many volumes on the library’s renovated shelves, continues the conversation about the global benefits of replacing financial profits with the dividends that come from doing good. Billed as a “social business manual,” it is a follow up to the best sellers “Banker to the Poor: Micro-lending and the battle against world poverty” and “Creating a World Without Poverty.”

Yunus’ latest work expands his argument that social business is a practical complement to capitalism that deserves increased use around the world for the good all. This innovative business model puts emphasis on addressing social problems not maximizing profits. Investors get back only the money they contribute but can reap even more in non-financial rewards.

The micro-credit guru considers finding ways to assist the 47 million uninsured in the United States as much of a challenge and opportunity for this brand of enterprise as supplying vaccinations for diseases that only affect the poor in developing countries.

“Health care is a big problem,” Dr. Yunus said in remarks to the Commonwealth Club of San Francisco in 2008. “This can be an excellent social business, [but] profit maximizing companies won’t go to this because they won’t get that kind of brilliant profit out of it so they go someplace else.”

Micro-credit’s enormous impact is indisputable. Grameen Bank, a financial institution he founded in 1983 that now has more than 7 million borrowers, is widely credited with helping the poor become self-sufficient and women start businesses in unprecedented numbers in the developing world.

Yunus’ work continues to draw accolades, the latest coming from the Bonn, Germany based SolarWorld AG. The world’s largest solar panel manufacturer is set to present him and his Grameen Bank with its SolarWorld Einstein Award in September.

Micro-loans have helped bring solar energy to rural Bangladesh. Frank Asbeck, SolarWorld CEO, praised Yunus as a “radically new thinker in economics and banking.”

“He has recognized the potential of the poorest of this world to manage a decent living on the basis of a small starting credit, a lot of creativity, and the sun as a source of energy,” Asbeck said.

Additional honors for Yunus include the 2009 Presidential Medal of Freedom, the 2006 Nobel Peace Prize for economic and social development, and 26 honorary doctorate degrees.

Constructed in 1982, the Robert W. Woodruff Library serves the Atlanta University Center’s member schools—Clark Atlanta University, Morehouse College and Spelman College. With a combined enrollment of 10,000, these colleges and universities constitute the world’s largest consortium of historically black institutions of higher education. For more information on the AUC Woodruff Library, it’s programs, services, and resources, email askref(at)auctr(dot)edu or call 404-978-2067.

Fat Distribution Plays a Role in Weight Loss Success in Patients at Risk of Diabetes

Oak Brook, Ill. (Vocus) August 24, 2010

Why is it that some people lose weight and body fat when they exercise and eat less and others don’t? German researchers say MRI and magnetic resonance (MR) spectroscopy can provide the answer — and help predict who will benefit from lifestyle changes. Results of the study are published online and will appear in the November issue of the journal Radiology.

“You may have two individuals who weigh the same and have the same body mass index (BMI), but have very different levels of internal fat,” said lead researcher and physicist Jürgen Machann, Dipl. Phys., from University Hospital Tübingen in Tübingen, Germany. “Abdominal and liver fat are the two most important factors in predicting whether a lifestyle intervention will be successful.”

Machann and researchers performed MRI and MR spectroscopy on 243 individuals prior to and nine months after a lifestyle intervention. The intervention called for a weight loss of 5 percent, reducing fat intake to a maximum of 30 percent of total calories (including less than 10 percent in the form of saturated fat) and engaging in moderate physical activity such as walking at least three hours a week.

Each of the participants, which included 144 females (mean age 44.5 years) and 99 males (mean age 47.3), was considered at risk of developing type 2 diabetes as a result of obesity, measured by a body mass index (BMI) of 27 or greater or having an impaired glucose tolerance or a first-degree relative with the disease.

“Common methods, such as body impedance analysis, may determine that a body consists of 25 percent fat, but that does not tell you how the fat is distributed,” Machann said. “BMI is a good measure for obesity but not necessarily a predictor for health risk, because not only the amount of fat, but also its distribution are essential. Only by looking inside the body can you establish the amount of visceral (abdominal) and liver fat.”

MRI allowed researchers to differentiate fatty tissue from lean tissue throughout the body. MR spectroscopy generated additional data on the fat content of individual organs, such as the liver.

Researchers used improved insulin sensitivity to measure the success of the lifestyle intervention. Individuals with type 2 diabetes do not respond correctly to insulin, a hormone secreted by the pancreas that aids in metabolism. In pre-diabetes, cells become resistant to the action of insulin.

After nine months of participating in the lifestyle intervention, insulin sensitivity improved in 71 percent of the men and 58 percent of the women. Individuals with improved insulin sensitivity lost significant amounts of visceral fat (a mean reduction of 19 percent for women and 20 percent for men) and liver fat (a mean reduction of 35 percent for women and 44 percent for men) while reducing 3 to 5 percent of body weight.

“The participants who improved their health status as a result of diet and exercise started out with lower baseline levels of abdominal and liver fat,” Machann said. “In our study, these two factors predetermined whether or not a lifestyle intervention would be successful for a particular individual.”

Individuals who did not improve insulin sensitivity as a result of lifestyle changes lost much smaller amounts of visceral fat (a mean reduction of 4 percent for women and 6 percent for men). The men also lost less liver fat (a mean of 15 percent), and women gained a mean of 22 percent in liver fat.

“Our results demonstrate that with MRI and MR spectroscopy, we can determine who will benefit from dietary changes and exercise and who will need other interventions,” Machann said.

“Follow-up Whole-Body Assessment of Adipose Tissue Compartments during a Lifestyle Intervention of a Large Cohort at Increase Risk for Type 2 Diabetes.” Collaborating with Machann were Claus Thamer, M.D., Norbert Stefan, M.D., Nina F. Schwenzer, M.D., Konstantinos Kantartzis, M.D., Hans-Ulrich Häring, M.D., Claus D.Claussen, M.D., Andreas Fritsche, M.D., and Fritz Schick, Ph.D.

AT A GLANCE

• Body fat distribution can identify patients who will benefit from lifestyle changes, such as diet and exercise.

• Lower amounts of abdominal and liver fat can be predictors in improving insulin sensitivity in patients who make lifestyle changes.

• MRI may predict which patients need additional weight loss intervention.
